Leaving room for chance.
In this fictional studio visit, we follow the slow process behind Mara Velásquez’s painted surfaces.

A few open jars sit beside a canvas. Some hold pigment, others a colour mixed earlier in the week. On the wall, a painting has been turned to face away from the room. Mara is giving it a few days before she looks again.
The first layer rarely survives intact. She adds a wash, lets it settle, then removes part of it with a cloth. A line from an earlier painting can remain visible through the next one. She keeps it when it gives the surface something she did not plan.
In The shape of silence, warm ochre surrounds a dark, almost architectural form. Up close, the ground is less settled than it first appears. Small gaps expose the linen. The painting keeps a record of the time spent making it.
